| 1940 SEASON REVIEW |
Pitching carried the 1940 Detroit team to the second best record in the
American League. Thanks to the Best Pitcher Award winner Bucky Walters and co-ace
Kirby Higbe the Tigers had the best team ERA in the HRBL. Unfortunately, the offense was
nothing short of pathetic. Only three Detroit players had batting averages higher than .250 and only
two Tigers had more than 10 home runs. Catcher Bill Dickey provided a rare bright spot in the offense,
batting .305 with 18 home runs. The Tigers team batting average of .243 was the second worse in the American
League to only last place Washington and the dismal offense prevented the Tigers from truly contending for the
AL pennant.
Detroit is a very much unchanged team for the 1941 season. Detroit was able to sign shortstop Larry Lyn, but
Lyn in no way can be classified as an offensive machine. If Detroit is able to avoid injury their pitching may
be able to carry them yet again to a respectable standing but unless someone can step up offensively to support
Dickey, their is little hope for the Tigers to reach the World Series.
